Engineering a Better Transistor
For a relatively simple, three-terminal device, the transistor has had quite an impact on the world. The original idea behind the transistor, invented by the now famous team of Bardeen, Brattain and Shockley at Bell Labs in December, 1949, was to replace the mechanical switches used to route telephone calls with solid-state devices.
