Applied Breaks Ground
on Singapore Center

Applied Materials Inc. (Santa Clara, Calif.) broke ground on construction of the company's Singapore operations facility, which is expected to be completed in late 2009. The 32,000 m2 facility in the Changi North Industrial Park will serve as a hub for Applied's business activities throughout Asia. CEO Mike Splinter said, "Sitting at a virtual crossroads between India and China, Singapore has proven to be a great place to do business with its strong transportation and logistics network, extensive supplier base and talented workforce."

IITC on the 3-D Integration Bandwagon

Phil Garrou went to the International Interconnect Technology Conference (IITC) last month and found some 3-D gems from Freescale, IMEC, LETI and TSMC. The TSMC paper generated a lot of interest, given the foundry's announcement that it would support 3-D interconnects. "The presentation by H.J. Tu, while not divulging their ultimate preferred process sequence, did show enough real data to indicate that they are serious," Garrou writes, adding that "we all eagerly await further process data from TSMC."
