What a waste of good silicon! That was one of my first thoughts touring the Deutsche Solar solar cell manufacturing plant in Freiburg, Germany, a couple of weeks ago. Yes, I went behind the iron curtain for you, dear subscriber, took secret photos and even taped the CEO telling me all about their methods for making the solar panels you put on your roof. Okay, the iron curtain is long gone and I asked permission for each photo but, as you can see in my blog post, there's nothing fancy about the solar cell process. The real opportunity is in growth. Factories exactly like Deutsche Solar are popping up all over the world (including China), consuming vast amounts of silicon — only for its 1.6 eV bandgap and a trickle of energy, when it can do so much more — but it's adding up.
