  • Process Control, Yield Management in HB-LED Manufacturing

Srini Vedula, Mike von den Hoff, Tom Pierson and Kris Raghavan, KLA-Tencor Corp., Milpitas, Calif., March 8, 2010
HB-LED TS With the explosive growth in high-brightness LED (HB-LED) applications including backlighting and general illumination, device manufacturers are increasing focus on improved device performance and reduced manufacturing costs. In-line inspection during device fabrication significantly increases LED performance through improved process control and allows device makers to achieve cost savings through higher yields.  More
  • Baolab Claims CMOS MEMS Breakthrough

David Lammers, News Editor, March 8, 2010
baolab mems TS Baolab Microsystems (Barcelona, Spain) claims that is has developed manufacturing techniques that allow MEMS devices to be built within a standard CMOS process flow. The technique involves etching the IMD layers within the interconnect layers, said Baolab CEO David Doyle.  More
  • Quake is Minor Disruption at TSMC, UMC

David Lammers, News Editor, March 5, 2010
An early Thursday earthquake in southern Taiwan caused minor damage at the Tainan chip fabs operated by foundries TSMC and UMC. Both reported that the company-wide impact would be limited to ~1.5 days, as the Tainan fabs underwent safety, maintenance and equipment checks. Several major producers of large LCDs also were impacted by the trembler.  More
  • IBM Nanophotonic Switch Promises Faster Energy-Efficient Computing

Alexander E. Braun, Senior Editor, March 4, 2010
IBM Nanophotonic TS IBM researchers have created an ultrafast avalanche photodetector that uses light for communication between computer chips, which could be powered by a regular AA battery.  More
  • SEMI Seeks Input to Semicon Programs

Paula Doe, SEMI, San Jose, March 2, 2010
SEMI is seeking input this month for the technical programs held during Semicon West and Intersolar in July. Session agendas for the complex show need to be set by April and inputs are needed this month.  More
  • IMEC Reports Record Organic RFID Circuit

David Lammers, News Editor, February 17, 2010
IMEC RFID TS (021710-IMECTFT330.jpg) Researchers reported an organic TFT-based RFID circuit, with a record data rate and 10 V operation. The team, including researchers from IMEC, TNO and Polymer Vision, said the 64-bit transponder circuit has a data rate of 4.3 Kb/sec, twice as fast as the test circuit reported at last year's ISSCC. The team used a dual-gate design, with the top gate controlling the threshold voltage in the all-p-type technology.  More
  • Phase Transition Research Points to New Devices

Alexander E. Braun, Senior Editor, February 11, 2010
carbon nano TS (021110-Carbon-Nano330.jpg) Using carbon nanotubes, University of Washington scientists have devised a way to explore how phase transitions function in fewer than three dimensions and at the level of just a few atoms.  More
  • Crystal Growth Points to Defect-Free Thin Films

Alexander E. Braun, Senior Editor, February 1, 2010
Crystal Growth TS (020110-crystal330.jpg) Cornell University researchers said colloidal research may lead to the discovery of principles that will enable the growth of defect-free thin films. The team led by Professor Itai Cohen tested conditions that lead to smooth crystal growth, and discovered that the random darting motion of the particles is a key factor affecting how crystals grow.  More

  • Thin-Film PV Looks to Close Performance Gap

    Katherine Derbyshire, Contributing Editor 02/01/10
Comparing commercial module performance with champion cell performance, this article considers some of the reasons for the performance gap in thin-film PV technologies, and examines future costs and efficiencies.
  • Risk, Reward and the Value of a Solar Array

Oliver Janssen, CEO, eIQ Energy, San Jose, www.eiqenergy.com 02/01/10
What is the value of a solar power plant? It's easy to calculate the cost of materials and installation. And for the traditional off-the-grid user, or someone taking a personal step toward green technology, that's probably enough. But as commercial and utility-scale solar installations proliferate, they will increasingly be bought and sold as investments.
  • CPV Reaches for More Sunlight

    Aaron Hand, Editor-in-Chief 12/01/09
As young and developing as the solar photovoltaics industry is today, concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) finds itself in an even more nascent stage, fighting for visibility and funding in a burgeoning solar market. The CPV industry is about where the thin-film PV industry was seven or eight years ago, struggling for bankability, according to Nancy Hartsoch, director of the CPV Consortium.
