SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO. (KSE:005930), the world's largest computer memory chip maker, said today it started production at its newly-built silicon wafer factory in Singapore. Samsung Electronics, together with its joint investment partner SILTRONIC AG OF GERMANY, held a completion ceremony of the US$400 million-invested wafer plant in Singapore earlier in the day, the South Korean company said in a statement.
* A wafer is a thin slice of semiconductor material, such as a silicon crystal, used in the fabrication of integrated circuits and other microdevices.
* The plant currently has a monthly output capacity of 300,000 wafers, which will be used by both Samsung and SILTRONIC, one of the leading silicon wafer providers in the world.
