(ANSA) - Trieste, May 12 - Italian intermodal terminal Trieste-Fernetti, located on Italy's border with Slovenia, will build a 6.5 mln euro ($10.1 mln) photovoltaic plant at the terminal site with a capacity of 1.0 MW, Fernetti said on May 12, 2008.

The construction of the plant, which will have 4,400 polycrystalline silicon panels, is part of the investment programme of the terminal. The investment plan for 2008 also envisages extending by 6,000 sq m a warehouse which will cost 1.8 mln euro ($2.8 mln), as well as building a water treatment plant. All works planned for 2008 are scheduled to be completed in September and October 2008.

The photovoltaic plant will allow the terminal to produce 1,200,000 kWh which will save Trieste-Fernetti 100,000 euro ($155,000) per year for energy and help release more electricity in the network, Fernetti terminal chairman Giorgio Maranzana said.

Up to 600 road trains pass every day through the terminal, while another 200 road trains are waiting to board the roll-on/roll off (ro-ro) ships at the Trieste port to set sail towards the Turkish ports.
