• The top three foundries (TSMC, UMC and Chartered Semiconductor) plan to cut their capital spending this year by almost 40%.

• While the top three are cutting back, there are as many as 11 challengers to the top three.

• Hoping to gain market share, these challengers will increase their spending by 88%.

• The top three accounted for 92% of new foundry capacity from 1998-2000.

• The top three's share of new capacity added from 2001 to 2003 will fall to 48%.

• The challenger's share of total foundry capacity will rise from just 15% in 2000 to 32% by 2003.
