VLSI Research (San Jose) recently completed its analysis of the semiconductor equipment market for 2000. In wafer fab equipment, the largest segment is deposition equipment, at $10.4B, dominated by Applied Materials (Santa Clara, Calif.) with 55% market share, followed by San Jose-based Novellus with 10% and Tokyo-based Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL) with 10%. The second largest market is exposure equipment at $6.06B, where Nikon Precision (Tokyo) has 40% of the market, followed by ASML (Veldhoven, Netherlands) with 30% and Canon Inc. (Osaka, Japan) with 20%. Dry process technology is a $5.68B market. Applied Materials and TEL both have 25% market share and Lam Research Corp. (Fremont, Calif.) has 20%. The $4.63B process diagnostic equipment market is dominated by San Jose-based KLA-Tencor with 40% of the market, followed by Hitachi (Irving, Texas) and Applied Materials, each of which has 10%.Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (Kyoto, Japan) controls the greatest share of the wet processing equipment market with 35%. Each of the closest competitors, TEL and SCP Global Technologies (Boise, Idaho), has 5% of this $2.41B market. The rapidly growing CMP segment is currently a $1.71B market - Applied Materials holds 50%, Tokyo-based Ebara has 20% and Speedfam-IPEC (Chandler, Ariz.) has 15%.
