Fab Monitor: Drop in New Fab Activity

-- Semiconductor International, 5/1/2001

Key points
  • In January, the three-month moving average of orders for chipmaking equipment was 36% below its August peak.
  • After peaking at more than $7B in July 2000, groundbreakings for new fabs had fallen by more than 50% - to $3.4B - in March 2001.
  • Although there have been some pushbacks of 300 mm fab plans, companies continue to begin construction of 300mm fabs.
  • Four 300 mm fabs started construction in Q1 of this year.
  • As many as seven more 300 mm fabs could begin construction before year-end.
  • Even with the relative strength of 300mm fab activity, we expect new fab starts to fall by 50% this year.
