The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) has revamped its online IEEE-USA Job Service Web site to assist "active" as well as "passive" job-seekers. Members can visit www.ieee.org/jobs and enter a profile that includes their professional skills and educational background, along with the type of position they are looking for, salary and location. The user will be contacted if a potential match is made. "Passive" candidate data is never made available to prospective employers unless the job-seeker "opts in," in which case a resume is sent and the recruitment process begins. The service is free of charge for members; employers pay on a per-job or fixed-fee basis. For further information, visit www.ieee.org.The International Microelectronics Packaging Society's (IMAPS) Industry Guide is now available free online at www.imaps.org/indguide. The guide, a comprehensive listing of products and services for more than 600 organizations, is organized into a searchable database of member and non-member companies. The guide is expected to feature more than 1200 companies by 2002. All companies and organizations involved in microelectronics and packaging can be listed. For further information, contact Ann Bell at 1-202-548-8717 (e-mail: abell@imaps.org), or visit www.imaps.org.
A new director of public policy and government relations is being sought bytheAmerican National Standards Institute(ANSI). Jane Schweiker is stepping down June 1 to become a part-time consultant for the institute. The successful candidate for this Washington, D.C.-based position should have "the proven ability to work with Congress as well as a variety of federal agencies as an advocate of standardization and conformity assessment issues." Recruitment ads will appear in several Washington publications, and posted on ANSI Online. For more information, those interested should contact Mary Bowers, executive assistant to the president and CEO, at mbowers@ansi.org, or visit www.ansi.org.
The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology(IEST) has been approved by ANSI as an accredited standards-writing organization under the canvass method. Each submitted document must be subjected to the canvass method due process procedure, which enables any interested party to express an opinion, have it considered and appeal any adversely affecting aspect of the document. The document must also be balanced and not dominated by any stated interest category. To assure compliance, any document the institute submits must go through a Standards Action Public Review. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME) will host a seminar on optical switching and MEMS applications May 31-June 1 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, Universal City, Calif. The seminar, part of its Continuing Education Series, will focus on the latest developments in MEMS technology, commercial applications and research. In addition, there will be a special pre-conference workshop held from noon to 4 p.m. May 30. Topics will include requirements placed by global network operators on optical switching devices; the critical role that optical MEMS devices play in realizing these requirements for all-optical switching; and the challenges faced by MEMS technologies on their path to commercial reality. Attendance at the pre-conference is limited to 30 people. For further information, visit www.asme.org.
