Wuhan Xinxin Launches 300 mm Production Line

Wuhan Xinxin Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. has started production of flash memories for Spansion Inc. Plans call for Shanghai-based foundry SMIC, which operates the fab, to acquire all of the assets of Wuhan Xinxin by the end of 2011.

At its 300 mm fab operated by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC, Shanghai, China), Wuhan Xinxin Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (Wuhan, China) has started production of flash memories for Spansion Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.).

In 2006, the Wuhan Municipal Government invested 10.7 billion yuan ($1.5B) in the 300 mm fab, agreeing that SMIC would operate the line. At that time, plans called for SMIC to operate the Wuhan Xinxin fab as a DRAM foundry for Elpida Memory Inc. (Tokyo). However, the dramatic drop in DRAM prices caused a production delay and a switch to flash products, with an expectation of higher gross profit margins. The partners revamped the fab’s equipment and layout, and conducted staff training anew.

The fab is producing 65 nm MirrorBit NOR flash now, and next year plans to begin producing 43 nm Spansion MirrorBit Ornand2 flash products. In 2007, Spansion signed on with SMIC as a foundry partner. SMIC President Richard Chang said plans call for the Wuhan fab to move from 65 nm now to 43 nm next year, and then to 32, 25 and 18 nm products. Now, Wuhan Xinxin is processing 3000 wpm with plans to increase to 12,000 wpm next year.

In an interview, Wuhan Xinxin President Liu Danping said that plans call for SMIC to complete its acquisition of all assets of Wuhan Xinxin by the end of 2011.
