Qimonda AG today announced that it has started shipping Rambus XDR DRAM in volume for the Playstation 3 (PS3) system.

Qimonda started to ship first samples of the 512-Mb XDR DRAM in January as part of the Germany-based memory maker’s product diversification in non-PC applications.

“We are very proud to have started the volume production of our XDR product for PS3. This is a further milestone reflecting our product diversification strategy and demonstrating our leading position in the specialty memory market,” said Robert Feurle, VP of specialty DRAM at Qimonda, in a statement. “We are prepared to support all our customers with XDR DRAM in various applications.”

Rambus XDR DRAM is based on a single, 2-byte-wide, 3.2-GHz XDR DRAM component that provides 6.4-GBs/sec of peak bandwidth and has a roadmap extending to 12.8GB/sec. XDR memory first appeared in Sony’s Playstation 3 through an agreement Rambus inked with IBM for use of XDR in the Cell BE. Toshiba  and Matsushita are also among the companies that have licensing agreements for XDR.

“Qimonda’s leadership and commitment to the XDR memory architecture expands the supply for this advanced memory solution for consumer and computing applications,” said Sharon Holt, senior VP of worldwide sales, licensing and marketing at Rambus, in the statement. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with Qimonda on future XDR memory solutions for high-volume applications demanding breakthrough performance.”
