3. TSMC Readies 40 nm Process Technology

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC, Hsinchu, Taiwan) unveiled a 40 nm linear shrink of its 45 nm manufacturing process technology in both a performance-driven, general-purpose (40G) version and a low-power (40LP) flavor. Production is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2008.

MEMS technology is driving new applications, making sensors and actuators the fastest growing part of the overall semiconductor industry, according to IC Insights Inc. (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Rob Lineback, an IC Insights senior analyst, said the overall market for semiconductors — now a $237.5B industry — is expected to be strong over the five-year period ending in 2012, with a 12% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).
