Capital Spending by Companies Headquartered in Asia-Pacific
Key points:
- Although semiconductor capital spending will be down by at least 5% in 2001, capital spending by Asia-Pacific companies will increase slightly.
- In 1990, Asia-Pacific companies accounted for only 10% of all capital spending.
- Asia-Pacific companies today account for 33% of the industry total, more than any other regionally based companies, including in the United States.
- Taiwanese companies will cut spending by ~5% this year.
- South Korean companies will increase spending slightly, but plan cutbacks if weak market conditions continue.
- Within the rest of Asia-Pacific (China, Malaysia and Singapore), both Chinese and Singaporean companies plan to increase spending.
- Spending by Chinese companies will top $1.4B in 2001.
- Four new fabs are under construction in China.
