Changhong Electric Co. Ltd. (Guangdong, China) recently announced that it plans to set foot in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) industry by setting up Sichuan Hongshi Display Technology Co. Ltd. Changhong Electric is a consumer electronics manufacturer with 2005 sales of $2.2B.

The OLED facility will be established with an investment of 600 million yuan ($83M) in partnership with Chengdu Hi-Tech Investment Group Co. Ltd. Changhong will invest 360 million yuan ($50M) and take a 60% stake in the joint venture, while Chengdu Hi-Tech Investment will hold a 40% stake.

The new company will focus on the R&D, manufacturing, sales and service of OLED modules, head-mounted displays and mobile displays.

OLED displays do not require backlighting and are well-suited to low-cost and mobile systems.

In its LCD modules, products for computers and LCD TV sets each will take up 50% of production.

Five or six component manufacturers are expected to participate in the project, with investment in the components plants topping $100M.
