Changhong Electric Invests in OLED Plant

Changhong Electric Co. Ltd. (Guangdong, China) recently announced that it plans to set foot in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) industry by setting up Sichuan Hongshi Display Technology Co. Ltd. Changhong Electric is a consumer electronics manufacturer with 2005 sales of $2.2B.
The OLED facility will be established with an investment of 600 million yuan ($83M) in partnership with Chengdu Hi-Tech Investment Group Co. Ltd. Changhong will invest 360 million yuan ($50M) and take a 60% stake in the joint venture, while Chengdu Hi-Tech Investment will hold a 40% stake.
The new company will focus on the R&D, manufacturing, sales and service of OLED modules, head-mounted displays and mobile displays.
LG-Philips plant starts production
The LG-Philips liquid crystal module plant located in Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development District started trial production on Jan. 1, 2008, and the formal commissioning ceremony is expected to be held in March or April of this year. Half of the production capacity will be devoted to LCD modules for LCD TV sets, with a planned production capacity of 100,000 units per month. In its LCD modules, products for computers and LCD TV sets each will take up 50% of production.
Five or six component manufacturers are expected to participate in the project, with investment in the components plants topping $100M.
