IMEC to Establish Research Center in Hsinchu, Taiwan

Staff -- Semiconductor International, 1/23/2008 9:25:00 AM

IMEC (Leuven, Belgium) said that it has established a representative office, IMEC Taiwan, in the Hsinchu Science Park. The office is expected to grow into an R&D center within the coming six months, the consortium announced.

IMEC intends to work with Taiwan’s foundries on semiconductor process technology research, and on IC and system design with companies and academia. Low-cost IC prototyping, small-volume production, and developing heterogeneous process technologies for fab-lite and fabless companies are among IMEC’s other goals.

IMEC has signed a memoranda of understanding with Taiwanese companies, R&D institutes and universities, and has the strong support of the National Science Council Taiwan, IMEC said in a press release.

Gilbert Declerck,
CEO, IMEC
"Taiwan is worldwide recognized as the core of semiconductor foundry manufacturing. Combined with its innovative power, the Taiwanese industry will also become a leading player in the development of new applications. We are convinced that an institute like IMEC Taiwan can add value in this evolution," said Gilbert Declerck, IMEC’s CEO.

"By bridging the cultural, language and geographical gap, we can facilitate the access to our programs and easily interact with local companies. We intend also to tap into the local pool of highly schooled labor to strengthen our system and IC design team," he said.
