IBM Corp. (Armonk, N.Y.) said Wednesday (Dec. 26) that it has licensed its 45 nm bulk CMOS technology to foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC, Shanghai).
Matthew Szymanski, vice president of corporate relations at SMIC, said the agreement will “accelerate SMIC’s technology advancement in logic process technology, and help us provide optimal solutions for our customers at our 300 mm facilities.”
With access to IBM’s expertise on “design enabler and system IP comprehension,” SMIC can transition its customers to 45 nm technology, Szymanski said. SMIC expects to use the process technology to make ICs for 3G handsets, graphics ICs and consumer-use devices.
Kevin Hutchings, vice president of IP licensing for IBM, pointed out that SMIC is the largest Chinese foundry, located in “a rapidly growing, strategic marketplace.”
IBM, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (Singapore) and Samsung Electronics Co. (Seoul, South Korea) participate in the Common Platform, intented to allow customers to foundry ICs at any fab adhering to the Common Platform specifications. However, SMIC will not join the Common Platform initiative, an IBM spokesman said.Talkback
