Dedicated Foundry Wafer Capacity

Key points:

  • Dedicated foundry capacity rose from 130,000 200 mm equivalent wafers at the beginning of 1995 to 500,000 at the end of 1999.
  • Dedicated foundry capacity will increase from 500,000 200 mm equivalent wafers a month at the end of 1999 to almost 1.4 million 200 mm equivalent wafers at the end of 2001.
  • Twenty percent of all semiconductor capital spending in 2000 will be by dedicated foundries.
  • The top three foundries - TSMC, UMC and Chartered Semiconductor - will account for more than 80% of all dedicated foundry capacity in 2000.
  • Companies in Malaysia, China, Korea and Israel are planning, building and opening new fabs.
  • IDMs, such as Hyundai, are entering the foundry business.
