Electronics Industry Update
-- Semiconductor International, 10/1/2000
The total dollar value of worldwide semiconductor sales rose 28.1% between May and June, according to preliminary data released by the SIA. Since this information is not seasonally adjusted, and the middle of any year is always very active for the semiconductor industry, we see a healthy increase in sales between May and June in even the weakest of years. However, between the same two months of last year, dollar sales volume had increased by 17.5%.
June chip sales had an estimated current dollar value 58.6% above June 1999. This was the best over-the-year growth in any month since May 1984.
The average sales price (ASP) of all semiconductors (integrated and discrete) sold in June was up 14.4% from the May average of 50.5 cents, and 21.2% from June 1999.
Data compiled and published by the U.S. Commerce Department show the dollar value of shipments from U.S. manufacturers of computers and peripheral equipment was 27.5% greater in June than during June 1999. Through the first six months of 2000, shipments were 21.4% ahead of the year-earlier pace; orders to the industry were ahead by exactly the same magnitude.
