Fabs Value by Year Construction Begins

-- Semiconductor International, 9/1/2000

Key Points

More 300 mm fabs than 200 mm fabs are currently being built (as measured by the cost of construction and equipment).

In 1999, the industry started construction on $13B worth of 200 mm fabs and only $5B worth of 300 mm fabs.

This year, we expect the industry will start construction on $25B worth of 300 mm fabs, slightly more than for 200mm fabs.

In 2001, new 300 mm capacity will exceed new 200 mm capacity by 6%.

New fab spending for 300 mm equipment will surpass new fab spending for 200 mm equipment by the fourth quarter of 2001.

Next year 300 mm production fabs will be in operation in Europe, Japan, North America and Taiwan.

Strategic Marketing Associates is a market research company focusing on the fab. For information about capital spending and new fab projects, call Strategic Marketing Associates at 1-831-464-2669.
