The dollar value of worldwide semiconductor sales rose by 8.9% between April and May, according to preliminary data released by the SIA.
Worldwide chip sales this May had an estimated current dollar value 45.3% above the May 1999 level. The dollar value of chip sales to the Americas this May was down slightly, at 41.1% above May 1999. Cumulative year-to-date sales to the Americas were 28.8% higher through May of this year than during January-May of 1999, versus a worldwide year-to-date increase of 37.1%.
The value of chip sales to Europe in May was 48.0% higher than during May 1999; for full-year 1999, chip sales to Europe were estimated to be 8.4% higher than 1998. Sales to Japan were 48.9% higher in May than in May 1999, after ending last year 26.7% ahead of the 1998 total. Through the first five months of this year, chip sales to Japan were 42.1% ahead of 1999. The dollar value of chip sales to the rest of the Asia/Pacific market (all nations of the region except Japan) was 45.3% higher in May than in May 1999. January-May sales this year also were 45.3% greater than in the same five months of 1999. .
