The Materials Research Society (MRS) issued a call for papers for its 2001 MRS Spring Meeting, to be held in San Francisco, April 16-20. The meeting will include 33 symposia, including electronic materials, microelectronics, thin films and surface phenomena, and data storage. More than 97% of authors submit their abstracts through the MRS Web site: www.mrs.org/meetings/spring2001/. Deadline for submitting abstracts via the Web is November 1.The American Chemical Society plans to launch a new Journal, Crystal Growth & Design, next year. Its goal is to "stimulate and share knowledge among scientists and engineers working in the fields of crystal growth, crystal engineering and the industrial application of crystalline materials." Manuscripts may be submitted at http://pubs.acs.org/crystal.
The IEEE has partnered with Gobal Resources, a management and consulting firm, to help members develop their business savvy with MBA PowerPak, an eight-day, two-part management training program specifically designed for technical/scientific professionals. See www.MBAPowerPak.com for more details and schedule.
International SEMATECH named Coleen Miller of Texas Instruments director of environment, safety and health (ESH). An assignee from TI, Miller will oversee programs that further the integration of ESH technologies into all aspects of the semiconductor industry and result in greater water and energy conservation, "greenhouse" gas reductions, employee safety and health improvements, resources conservation, and chemical materials management. Miller has worked for 13 years at TI, most recently as manager of facilities. She also has worked as ESH manager, environmental engineer and a process engineer section manager at TI. As an assignee to International SEMATECH, Miller is "on loan" to the consortium for three years.
Robert E. Fischer, President of OPTICS 1, has been awarded the SPIE Gold Medal for the year 2000. The Gold Medal, the society's highest honor, recognizes Fischer's distinguished technical achievements in optics and electro-optics, and his long service to the society. The SPIE Technology Achievement Award goes to Professor Pallab Bhattacharya, Dr. Augusto L. Gutierrez-Aitken and Dr. Kao-Chih Syao for their key contributions to the field of integrated optical receivers. The three University of Michigan researchers conducted pioneering research and technology development that has led to the design, growth and realization of high-performance, monolithically integrated photoreceivers and arrays for long-wavelength telecommunication applications. The awards will be presented at a banquet at SPIE's Annual Meeting, set for July 30-August 4 in San Diego.
Journals of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) are now available online at www.asme.org/pubs/journals/online. Although access is available only to paid subscribers to a printed journal, visitors to the Web site can access papers on a pay-per-view basis. You will find full-text articles available in HTML, in Section HTML and as PDF files. Journals include the Journal of Electronic Packaging, the Journal of Heat Transfer and the Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology.
