300 mm Fab Construction Acceleration

Key Points

The pace of new 300 mm fab construction continues to accelerate.

At the end of 1999, the cumulative value of all new 300 mm fab starts was barely $5B.

By the end of the first quarter of this year, five 300 mm fabs were under construction, with a total value of $10B.

By the end of June, the cumulative value of new 300 fab starts exceeded $17B.

Semiconductor300, the joint venture between Infineon and Motorola, has been in production in Dresden, Germany, since the beginning of 1999.

By the end of 2000, both Intel and TSMC expect to have pilot lines in production.

By the end of 2001, as many as fourteen 300 mm fabs will be in production.
