International SEMATECH named Juergen Woehl of Infineon Technologies director of Advanced Tool Development Facility (ATDF), the consortium's tools and manufacturing processes proving facility. Woehl reports to Rinn Cleavelin, chief operating officer.Members of IEEEcan now access the cosponsored Stevens Institute of Technology Online WebCampuscourses and receive a 10% discount. On the graduate-degree track, the classes parallel the on-campus 13-week course with material updated weekly by the professor. In a slightly shortened version, the classes can be taken on an ad hoc basis for Continuing Education Units. See attila.stevens-tech.edu/gradschool/distance_learning/info/whatyouneed.html for more details. Members also can access new IEEE-generated Video-on-Demand tutorials at ieee.mediaplatform.com/vod/ieee/index.po.
The MRS-sponsored Fourth International Conference on Nitride Semiconductors (ICNS-4) will be held July 16-20, 2001, at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Denver. This conference series focuses on recent advances in GaN and related materials, and provides a forum for researchers to exchange information through oral and poster presentations. See www.mrs.org/meetings/icns-4/ for more info.
Billed as "the greatest exhibition of vacuum technology in the world," Vacuum 2000 will be held in Tokyo, Sept. 12-14. Organized by the Japan Vacuum Industry Association, the event will feature a wide selection of vacuum equipment, as well as applications and environmental issues. Organizers say 125 companies will be exhibiting, and 15,000 visitors are expected. More information can be found at www.cnt-inc.co.jp/exhibit/vacuum.
The Society for Information Display (SID) is celebrating a successful SID 2000 meeting. Among 425 exhibitors were Kodak and Sanyo, which jointly displayed a 5.5 in. organic light-emitting-diode (OLED) display. Said consultant Alan Sobel: "That Kodak/Sanyo display knocked my socks off!" SID 2000 also gave the society a chance to install new officers and committee leaders. New President Aris Silzars promised to build on predecessor Tony Lowe's achievements, and "aggressively expand the society's role and membership in the international display design, manufacturing and product integration communities."
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) announced a meeting of its Committee B01 on electrical conductors, to be held Oct. 26-27 in Orlando. For more info, contact Felicia Quinzi at fquinzi@astm.org.
The 19th North American Conference on Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) will be held Oct. 16-18 at Arizona State University in Tempe. The event, sponsored by the American Vacuum Society (AVS), will cover topics such as growth mechanisms, growth monitoring and characterization, heterostructures, low-dimensional structures and novel materials. For more info contact Prof. Yong-Hang Zhang at ASU (yhzhang@asu.edu).
The Workshop on Selective and Functional Film Deposition Technologies as Applied to ULSI Technology will be held Nov. 20-25 at the Ise-Shima Royal Hotel in Mie, Japan. It will focus on selective deposition, functional deposition, smart film deposition, CVD, PVD and solid-phase growth. See http://alice.xtal.nagoya-u.ac.jp/iuv-workshop for more details.
