SEM/TEM of the Month

-- Semiconductor International, 5/1/2000

This SEM shows structures of carbon nanotubes. Each bin-like structure consists of millions of multiwall carbon nanotubes with the diameter of individual tubes only a few nanometers. The sample was grown at NASA Ames Research Center (Moffett Field, Calif.) in a chemical vapor deposition reactor. The nanotubes exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties (Young's modulus over 1 Tera Pascal and tensile strength of over 200 Giga Pascal) but also have unique electronic properties. They can be either metallic or semiconducting and offer significant potential for future nanoelectronics.

Please send submissions for SEM/TEM of the month to Peter Singer, Editor-in-Chief, 58 Summer St., Andover, MA 01810 USA.
