Fab Update

-- Semiconductor International, 5/1/2000

Key points:

In November 1999, the three-month moving average of new fab starts hit the $3B mark. We expect the level of fab starts to remain at or above $3B for most of 2000.

The level of new fab starts (greenfields, facilitizing or equipping shells, and new fab lines in existing plants) has tripled since July 1999 and is six times as high as in July 1998.

The cumulative value of new fab starts in 2000 will increase by more than 50% and probably exceed the record $31B mark set in 1995.

More than half the new fab starts in 2000 will be 300 mm fabs.

Strategic Marketing Associates is a market research company focusing on the fab. For information about capital spending and new fab projects, call Strategic Marketing Associates at 1-831-464-2669.
