New Fab Starts by Year

Key points:

•New fab starts (greenfield fabs and new fab lines) peaked at more than $30B in 1995.

•With the downturn(s) in the chip industry, new fab starts fell to $10B in 1998.

•As the recovery gathered strength in 1999, new fab starts accelerated to $20B.

•New fab starts will continue to grow in 2000, to $25B or more.

•At least six 300 mm fabs, and perhaps as many as 12, will be under construction in 2000.
