The value of shipments from U.S. manufacturers of computers and peripheral equipment totaled $12.98B in October 1999, up 16.8% from September. The value of October SIC 357 shipments rose 15.8% from October 1998. New orders to the industry were up 16.1% from September 1999 and 18.6% over the estimated dollar value of October 1998.
The value of shipments from U.S. communications equipment makers fell 4.5% from September to October, following a 1.9% rise the month before. October shipments were 15.4% stronger than in October 1998, and shipments for the first 10 months of 1999 were 18.7% greater than in January-October 1998. The 12-month moving total of SIC 366 shipments through October was expanding at an 18.2% annualized rate -- the industry's best annual growth in more than 15 years.
The total dollar value of worldwide semiconductor sales declined 10.2% from September to October, after a 25.3% rise the month before. Compared to the same month a year earlier, October sales rose 23.2%. For the first 10 months of 1999, the dollar value of all chip sales (~ $118.7B) was up 15.8% from January-October 1998. •
