Both semiconductor sales and end-market production numbers stayed strong into 1999's final quarter. The Federal Reserve Board estimates October 1999 computer/peripherals industry (SIC 357) output rose 1.8% above the downwardly revised September level. October production was 37.7% above October 1998. For the 12 months ending last October, SIC 357 output growth was 42.8%. Through the first 10 months of 1999, industry output was 41.1% ahead of January-October 1998.
Industrial production in the electronic components industry group rose 0.8% from August to September. Monthly rises in the past six months averaged 3.0%. Total industry output through 1999's first nine months beat January-September 1998 by 32.4%.
The dollar value of worldwide semiconductor sales increased 25.3% from August to September. September sales were up 21.6% from the same month in 1998. For the first nine months of 1999, the dollar value of all chip sales rose 14.9% from January-September 1998. Unit sales volume also rose in September, with 13.5% more semiconductors sold than in August. Worldwide unit sales for 1999's first three quarters were 11.8% ahead of the 1998 pace. ·
