SEMICON China 2004
Peter Singer, Editor-in-Chief -- Semiconductor International, 2/1/2004
SEMICON China will be held March 17-19 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). As a testament to the rapid growth of the semiconductor industry in China, the show is expected to be even larger than last year's (itself the largest ever), and has been in a sold-out situation for several months. "This year, we will have about 1100 to maybe 1200 booths," said Mark Ding, the new president of SEMI China. "Last year, we had 1028 booths, so it's about a 10-15% increase."
The show will be located in two halls as it was last year. "This year, we rearranged the floor plans so that it is more efficient in terms of finding more space to satisfy the demand," Ding said. Last year, more than 765 companies featured their products in 9567 m2 of exhibit space.
Despite the reputation among the Chinese of taking their entire family to trade shows, including grandma and grandpa, a post-exposition analysis by SEMI showed that, of 15,380 registered visitors attending SEMICON China 2003, 89% of these attendees had purchasing power to specify, recommend or have final authority to buy. More specifically, 8% were in general management, 22% in process/equipment/manufacturing/design engineering, 11% in manufacturing/engineering management, 12% in marketing, 9% in purchasing and procurement, 5% in reliability/QC/testing, 10% in R&D, and 9% in sales. Some 34% of the visitors were from device manufacturers, 22% from equipment manufacturers, and 15% from materials manufacturers.
Two technology symposiums will be held during the three days of the show, one focused on IC manufacturing and the other on flat panel displays (FPDs). The exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.
