Fab Update: Fab Capital Spending

Key points

  • U.S. companies' share of capital spending will fall to 30% this year.
  • At the same time, Asia-Pacific companies' share will rise to more than 40%.
  • U.S. companies will cut their capital spending by more than $1B this year, their third straight year of decline.
  • Asia-Pacific companies, by contrast, will increase their spending by more than $3B.
  • After years of relative decline, Japanese companies' share of capital spending will increase this year. European companies' share will decline slightly to under 10%.
  • Because of outsourcing to foundries, Asia-Pacific will continue to have the industry's largest capital spending budgets in the future.
