Fab Update: Chip Capital Spending

Key points

  • Capital spending by U.S. companies will decline for the third straight year in 2003.
  • Though spending by Japanese companies will be flat this year, it will be down 70% from 2000.
  • European companies will increase their spending by 15% this year to $3B, down 60% from 2000.
  • Spending by Taiwan companies will be up by 9% in 2003, largely because of DRAM fab expansions.
  • South Korean companies will increase their spending by almost $2B this year.
