Fab Update: 2003 Capital Spending

Staff -- Semiconductor International, 2/1/2003

(Source: Strategic Marketing Associates)

Key points:

  • Estimated capital spending will increase this year by at least 12% to $31B.
  • Companies in Asia-Pacific (China, Southeast Asia, South Korea and Taiwan) will account for 48% of spending in 2003, up from 31% in 2000.
  • Increases in spending will not be uniform across all regions.
  • Chinese companies will spend as much as South Korean companies, and almost as much as Japanese companies.
  • U.S. companies are likely to cut spending this year.
  • The decline of the United States, Japan and Europe in relative capital spending is due primarily to outsourcing and the rise of foundries.
