Key points:
- Estimated capital spending will increase this year by at least 12% to $31B.
- Companies in Asia-Pacific (China, Southeast Asia, South Korea and Taiwan) will account for 48% of spending in 2003, up from 31% in 2000.
- Increases in spending will not be uniform across all regions.
- Chinese companies will spend as much as South Korean companies, and almost as much as Japanese companies.
- U.S. companies are likely to cut spending this year.
- The decline of the United States, Japan and Europe in relative capital spending is due primarily to outsourcing and the rise of foundries.
