Fab Update

Staff -- Semiconductor International, 1/1/2003

Key points:

  • Under currently announced fab plans, we estimate that fab construction spending in China this year will be $865M. This is more than any other region of the world.

  • Construction spending in Taiwan will be $625M, exceeded only by China.

  • Construction spending in Europe, Japan and North America will be $480M, or only 18% of the total.

  • Foundries are spearheading the growth of Chinese fabs.

  • China’s share of total industry capacity will rise from 3% today to >5% in 2005.

  • Accounting for >9% of the industry’s capital spending, China is well on its way to becoming one of the industry’s top manufacturing centers.

Strategic Marketing Associates is a market research company focusing on the fab. For information about capital spending and new fab projects, call Strategic Marketing Associates at 1-831-464-2669, visit www.scfab.com or e-mail sma@scfab.com.
