Fab Update: Capital Spending Trends

Staff -- Semiconductor International, 10/1/2002

Key points

  • The 2002 capital spending budgets of companies in Asia-Pacific (Taiwan, South Korea, China and Southeast Asia) will exceed those of any other group of companies.
  • Japanese companies have fallen from the top rung at the beginning of the 1990s to 4th place today.
  • Taiwanese companies spend more than any other group of companies except those in the United States.
  • Because Taiwan is home to the industry’s top two foundries and a growing DRAM industry, its share of industry capital spending will continue to grow.
  • China’s share of worldwide capital spending is almost the same as Taiwan’s was 10 years ago, and its share of industry capital spending will grow as fast as Taiwan’s.
