Fab Update: U.S. Wafer Capacity

-- Semiconductor International, 9/1/2002

Key points
• Fabs in the southwestern United States account for 12% of the world’s chip capacity, more than Singapore and Malaysia combined and slightly less than all of Europe.
• Thirty-five companies are currently operating 71 fabs in the Southwest.
• Four of the industry’s top 10 chip companies (Intel, Motorola, Samsung and Texas Instruments) have major fabs in the Southwest.
• The Southwest is home to two of the industry’s most advanced 300 mm fabs: Intel’s Fab 11X in Albuquerque, N.M.; and Texas Instruments’ DMOS 6 in Dallas.
• At least two more 300 mm fabs (Micron in Utah and Samsung in Texas) could be built in the Southwest in the next couple of years.

Strategic Marketing Associates is a market research company focusing on the fab. For information about capital spending and new fab projects, call Strategic Marketing Associates at 1-831-464-2669, visit www.scfab.com or e-mail sma@scfab.com.
