Fab Update: Foundry Capital Spending
Staff -- Semiconductor International, 8/1/2002

Key points
• As recently as 1992, foundries accounted for
a mere 1% of the chip industry’s capital spending; this year they will account
for 25%.
• Nearly 60% of all new fab activity this year will be by the
foundries; this is in large part due to the success of the fabless model.
•
As IDMs outsource an ever larger percentage of their production, the foundries’
share of capital spending and industry capacity will continue to grow.
•
China will account for a rapidly increasing share of Asia-Pacific’s
capacity.
