Fab Update: Future Fab Capacity

Staff -- Semiconductor International, 7/1/2002

  Key points:

• Of the world’s currently operational fab capacity, Asia-Pacific accounts for 30% and Japan for 31%.
• Of the future fab capacity that is likely to come on-line in the next few years, Asia-Pacific will account for more than 60%. This is in large part due to the success of the foundry model.
• As IDMs — which are concentrated in Europe, Japan and the United States — shift to foundries, manufacturing will concentrate more and more in Asia-Pacific.
• China will account for an ever increasing share of Asia-Pacific’s capacity.

Strategic Marketing Associates is a market research company focusing on the fab. For information about capital spending and new fab projects, call Strategic Marketing Associates at 1-831-464-2669, visit www.scfab.com or e-mail sma@scfab.com.
