Fab Update: New Fab Activity

Key points
• New fab announcements in April were the highest they’ve been
since September 2000.
• New fab activity virtually ceased in the second half
of 2001.
• We expect more than $20B of new fab activity this year, up more
than 40% from 2001.
• More than three-fourths of this new fab activity will
be for 300 mm fabs.
• More than 50% of this new fab activity will occur in
Asia-Pacific.
• Much of this new fab activity will take place in the shells
of fab projects that began during the last upturn and were then “put on the
shelf.”
