Fab Update: DRAM Capacity

Key points

• DRAM capacity measured in wafers will increase 12% from 2000 to 2003.
• DRAM wafer capacity grew by only 3% in 2001.
• Several Japanese companies’ share of DRAM capacity will fall from 30% in 2000 to 11% in 2003.
• Taiwanese DRAM manufacturers have invested in 300 mm fabs, and have gained significant capacity.
• Samsung has added capacity while financially strapped Hynix has not been able to add capacity.
• Micron’s capacity has grown by investment and by the acquisition of other companies’ DRAM assets.
• Committed to 300 mm fabs, Infineon may have more capacity than any other DRAM manufacturer in 2003.
