2002 Fab Activity

-- Semiconductor International, 4/1/2002

Key points
• New fab activity was at a very low level in Q1 of 2002.
• In Q4 of this year and Q1 of next year, we expect that as many as 16 fabs will begin production with a total cost of $14.6B when fully equipped.
• In Q4 of this year and Q1 of next year, we expect 13 fabs worth $14.2B will begin installing equipment, almost three times the value of fabs beginning equipment installation in Q1 of 2002.
• The number and value of fabs starting construction will also increase as 2002 unfolds.
• New fab activity and equipment spending will lag the recovery of the world economy by as much as six months, but by year end will be experiencing a strong recovery.

Strategic Marketing Associates is a market research company focusing on the fab. For information about capital spending and new fab projects, call Strategic Marketing Associates at 1-831-464-2669, visit www.scfab.com or e-mail sma@scfab.com.
