Going West for Water
Laura Peters, Senior Editor -- Semiconductor International, 12/1/2001
The McIlvaine Co. (Northbrook, Ill.), has determined that the Pacific and Western regions of the U.S. presently account for 32% of expenditures for high-purity and ultrapure water in the country — a figure expected to grow as more fabs are built in these areas. The report, compiled from two of the research firm's databases, includes the expenditures of 12,000 sites in the United States, including facilities for semiconductor and electronics (50% of total), power generation (35%) and pharmaceutical (15%) industries.
The Pacific states, including Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington, account for 18% of the spending on ultrapure water systems for semiconductors and electronics. Western states, including Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming, account for 7%, with the remaining 25% being spent in the Eastern region.
