Key points:
- Almost 60% of all future capacity (planned or under construction) will be located in Asia-Pacific.
- Only 30% of capacity now on-line is in Asia-Pacific.
- Japan, which currently accounts for >30% of existing capacity, will add less future capacity than any other region.
- North America’s share of future capacity will be 20%, down slightly from 23% currently.
- Europe’s share of future capacity will be 13%, also down slightly from 16% currently.
- Asia-Pacific’s rising share of the chip industry’s capacity will result from the increasing use of foundries concentrated in the region.
- Increased capacity in Asia-Pacific is also due to China’s rise as a chip manufacturing center.
