'Shine on! SEMICON!! Challenge the Future' is the theme of this year's SEMICON Japan exhibition. In its 22nd year, SEMICON Japan 98 will feature about 1500 exhibitors from 25 countries occupying 4000 booths. The show will be held at the Makuhari Messe convention center outside of Tokyo, Japan, from Dec. 2-4. Exhibition hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

A technical conference will be held in addition to the show. Called the SEMI Technology Symposium (STS), the conference provides a 'dynamic spectrum of technology direction for semiconductor manufacturing in the next generation from a wide variety of international aspects. The program provides a unique forum for both semiconductor manufacturers and suppliers to exchange views of technology trends for the future LSI,' according to conference organizers. The symposium will cover the Latest Technologies Topics (Break-through/Embedded Technology for System LSI), 300 mm, Lithography, Interconnection Technology, EHS, Manufacturing Efficiency & Monitoring Technology, Testing and Packaging Technology.

The keynote address will be presented by Mark Melliar-Smith, president and CEO, SEMATECH, on the 'Globalization of the Semiconductor Industry.' The presentation begins at 1:15 p.m. on Dec. 2 and ends at 1:55 p.m. in Room 2F of the International Conference Hall. The keynote speech is free, and no advance registration is necessary.

The remainder of the technical symposium will be held as follows:

  • Session 1: Dec. 2, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Convention Hall A, The Latest Technologies Topics - Breakthrough/ Embedded Technology for System LSI;
  • Session 2: Dec. 2, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Convention Hall B, 300 mm - Fab Innovation and Market Creation by 300 mm;
  • Session 3: Dec. 3, 10 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., International Conference Room, Test Methodology Toward the 21st Century - Test Cost Strategy for System LSI;
  • Session 4: Dec. 3, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Convention Hall A, Lithography - New Trend in The Excimer Era;
  • Session 5: Dec. 3, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Convention Hall B, Interconnection Technology - Never Ending Challenge Toward High Speed High Density Multi Level Interconnection;
  • Session 6: Dec. 4, 10 a.m. - 5:15 p.m., Convention Hall A, EHS - Approach for PFC Emission Reduction;
  • Session 7: Dec. 4, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Conference Room 301, Manufacturing Efficiency & Monitoring Technology - Pursuing High Efficiency & Accuracy of The Manufacturing Line and
  • Session 8: Dec. 4, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Convention Hall B, Packaging CSP Opens up It's New Era - Integration of the Wafer Processing and the Packaging.

Preceding the conference, the SEMI Technology Symposium Program Committee will present the Fifth Annual STS Award to individuals in recognition of their outstanding technical perspective:

  • Hiroshi Fukuda, Hitachi: Image Phase/Wave Aberration Measurement Using Phase-Retrieval Method;
  • Hideo Sugai, Nagoya University: Challenge to Advanced Etching Technologies Using Negative Ions;
  • Hirokazu Kandori, Sharp: Effective Application Methods of Iddq Testing and
  • Tomoki Shoji, Sony: Methods of Mounted Reliability Evaluation for CSP.

SEMI is also hosting a series of technical and business programs during SEMICON Japan 98, as follows:

  1. Economic Aspects of EHS for Semiconductor Industry,
  2. SEMInvest - A global capital market symposium,
  3. Selete 300 mm Program Update,
  4. SEMI Market Seminar - Worldwide Semiconductor Industry Market Seminar,
  5. 2nd SEMI Micromachine/MEMS Seminar,
  6. International Packaging Strategy Symposium(IPSS) 98,
  7. Silicon Wafer Workshop and
  8. Ergonomics Design for Semiconductor Industry.

The registration fee before Nov. 13 for the technical symposium is 33,600 yen ($280) for one session, 54,600 yen ($455) for two sessions and 71,400 yen ($595) for three sessions. After Nov. 14, the prices rise to 42,000 yen ($350) for one session, 68,250 yen ($569) for two sessions and 89,250 yen ($743) for three sessions. The registration fee includes 5% consumption tax, proceedings and lunch. English/Japanese simultaneous interpretation is available.
