Chang Receives 1999 Semiconductor &nIndustry Leadership Award
Staff -- Semiconductor International, 6/1/1999
The winner of Semiconductor International magazine's 1999 Semiconductor Industry Leadership Award (SILA) is Dr. Morris Chang, Chairman of TSMC. Dr. Chang is recognized for his pioneering efforts in the development of Taiwan's semiconductor industry and for his continuing leadership in the development of the foundry model. The award was presented at Cahners/In-Stat's 15th Annual Microelectronics Forum held the first week of May in Arizona. Both Semiconductor International and Cahners/In-Stat are part of Cahners Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier, the world's largest business-to-business publisher.

Technological leadership in manufacturing creates an obvious advantage in that it allows a manufacturer to make the same designs better and less expensively. Dr. Chang has been instrumental in the development of the pure-play foundry concept and the foundry industry as a whole -- a manufacturing industry focused on service instead of product. The foundry industry has allowed many new players to enter the market through the proliferation of fabless semiconductor houses, accelerating the growth of the industry and the rate of technological change.
Dr. Chang has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of TSMC since its establishment and is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vanguard and Wyse Technology Inc. TSMC is the world's largest dedicated integrated circuit (IC) foundry and offers a comprehensive set of IC fabrication processes, including processes to manufacture CMOS logic, mixed-mode, volatile and non-volatile memory and BiCMOS chips. Currently, TSMC operates two six-inch wafer fabs (Fab 1 and 2) and three eight-inch wafer fabs (Fab 3, 4 and 5), all located in Hsin-Chu, Taiwan. In mid-1998, TSMC announced that production wafers were being delivered from its first U.S. foundry, WaferTech, a joint venture with Altera, Analog Devices and Integrated Silicon Solutions Inc.
From 1985 to 1994, Dr. Chang was President and then Chairman of the Board of Directors of ITRI. Prior to that, he was President and Chief Operating Officer of General Instrument Corp. and Corporate Group Vice-President for Texas Instruments. Dr. Chang holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
Semiconductor International magazine created the Semiconductor Industry Leadership Award to recognize individual impact on the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Evaluations are based on business leadership -- including the development of new products, markets or technologies, and industry leadership -- including management and industry advocacy. The award's selection committee is comprised of leading industry information providers from around the world. Members include:
