Semiconductor Equipment Monitor
Staff -- Semiconductor International, 12/1/1998
The
orders-to-sales ratio plunged to 0.57 in August and remained there in September.
The book-to-bill measure has been below 1.0 for 10 consecutive months. Worldwide
sales data through July showed sales running 6.4% ahead of January-July 1997.
Numbers for full-year 1998 will show global sales lower than 1997's $27.5
billion. Through July, equipment sales to Japan had fallen 8.3% from their total
for the same period of 1997. Sales to the Americas and the Asia/Pacific region
(excluding Japan) were up just short of 9% through July but fading fast. July
sales to the Americas were 35% below the July 1997 level, while July's equipment
sales to the Asia/Pacific region were 26% lower than July 1997. Europe appears
to be in position to achieve some sales volume growth this year; through July,
equipment sales to the region were running 25% ahead of the 1997 pace. The
European market accounted for only 13% of total global sales of semiconductor
equipment through July (vs. 35% to the Americas, 31% to the Asia/Pacific region
and 21% to Japan). ![]()
