Lucent, Chartered to Open Fab in Singapore

Lucent Technologies' Microelectronics Pte. Ltd. and Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. of Singapore formed a $1 billion plus joint venture for wafer manufacturers. Lucent will own 51% of the joint venture company, which is called Silicon Manufacturing Partners Pte. Ltd. Both will share the production output, which is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this

year. Initially, the company will produce 200 mm wafers using 0.25 µm (250 nm) processing technology. At full capacity, the facility will produce 26,000 wafers/month. By the year 2000, production will migrate to 0.18 µm (180 nm) linewidths.
