Sony to Open Tech Center

Sony Corp. (Tokyo, Japan) opened a new Technology Center in Haneda, Tokyo, June 1. Representing a capital investment of about 400 million yen ($3.5 million), the laboratory facility has a floor area of 130 m2.
The primary objectives of lab will include CMP system evaluation and development of new metal processes. The Class 100 cleanroom will hold test equipment, a wet cleaning system, film thickness measurement equipment and three HV-9000 CMP systems. In the future, the firm plans to add a drying system, particle inspection system, and profiler.
Sony has set a target of 10 billion yen ($87 million) annual sales revenues for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, primarily CMP systems. The manufacturing point is Sony Max Co. Ltd. in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture, and a Japan service center is scheduled for construction at the same site.
