Four of Japan's largest chip manufacturers -- NEC Corp., Hitachi Ltd. (Tokyo,
Japan), Toshiba Corp. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. -- are planning to make
a combined investment of $5.8 billion by the year 2000 to upgrade manufacturing
capabilities for next-generation LSI, 0.18 mm (180 nm) chips targeted to the
multimedia market. NEC is expected to start sample shipments of these in October
and plans to manufacture two million units a month beginning in 1999.
