AVS, IUVSTA, ICSS Hold Joint Meeting in San Francisco

Peter Singer, Editor-in-Chief -- Semiconductor International, 9/15/2001

At a Glance
In a rare event that happens only every 15 years, the AVS International Symposium will be held in conjunction with the International Vacuum Congress (IVC) and International Conference on Solid Surfaces (ICSS).

Floorplan
The American Vacuum Society (AVS) and the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Application (IUVSTA) will join forces this year for a joint meeting to be held Oct. 28-Nov. 2 at the Moscone Center and Marriott Hotel in San Francisco. This is only the third time this combined event has been held — the first was in 1971 and the second in 1986.

Three conferences will be held simultaneously: the AVS 48th International Symposium, the IUVSTA 15th International Vacuum Congress (IVC) and the 11th International Conference on Solid Surfaces (ICSS). ICSS has been part of IVC since 1971.

It will be a busy week, in that close to 1200 talks will be presented in 16 parallel sessions, making this meeting 25% larger than any held previously. Major topics to be addressed in the technical symposia include applied surface analysis; biomaterials; dielectrics; electrochemistry; electronics; magnetic interfaces and nanostructures; microelectromechanical systems; manufacturing science and technology; nanostructures; organic films and devices; processing at the nanoscale; plasma science; semiconductors; surface engineering; surface science; thin films; tribology; and vacuum science and technology.

Topical conferences and special sessions will address topics such as advancing toward sustainability; biomaterials; magnetic recording; nanotubes; NBS-NIST Centennial; and photonic materials.

Readers of Semiconductor International are likely to find many topics of interest in various sessions, but the one tailored specifically to real-world manufacturing issues is the symposia on Manufacturing Science and Technology. The AVS Web site (www.avs.org) also includes a nifty personal scheduler that enables you to select the papers you wish to attend.

For those who would like to hear two or three talks held at the same time, organizers have designated 15 of the more popular sessions as "replay sessions." The presenters in these sessions are being asked to use PowerPoint, and their voices will be recorded in sync with their visuals during their talks. A CD will be burned and made available for viewing on request in the "replay room" after the session.

The equipment exhibit will be located on the same floor as the talks during three days of the conference, on Tuesday, Oct. 30 (11 a.m.-7 p.m.); Wednesday, Oct. 31 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.); and Thursday, Nov. 1 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.). Exhibitors are encouraged to wear scary costumes on Wednesday for Halloween. The exhibit will feature vacuum and deposition equipment, vacuum system components, analysis systems and vacuum-related services. See the following pages for show maps, exhibitor list and many of the new products that will be introduced at the show.

An extensive short-course program will be conducted during the week, designed to provide training for technicians, scientists and engineers under three broad categories: applied vacuum technology (13 courses); surface analysis and materials characterization (12 courses); and materials, thin film and coatings (25 courses). Visit www.avs.org for a complete list.

Also of interest is the Association of Vacuum Equipment Manufacturers International (AVEM International) annual technical and business meeting, which will be held 8-11:30 a.m. Oct. 30 at the Marriott. The topic will be "Trends in Markets and Technology for Vacuum Equipment." Visit www.avem.org for more information.

To encourage attendance from Silicon Valley, a daily shuttle service will operate from the CalTrain station to the Moscone Center every half hour.
